The Atlantic Hurricane Season is upon us and Florida residents should immediately prepare before hurricane warnings and watches begin to post. The National Hurricane Center is predicting an above-average amount of tropical activity. NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center is forecasting a likely range of 13 to 19 named storms (winds of 39 mph or higher), of which 6 to 10 could become hurricanes (winds of 74 mph or higher), including 3 to 6 major hurricanes (category 3, 4 or 5; with winds of 111 mph or higher). The following is a list of items you should have on hand and preparations you should make if a warning is issued:
HURRICANE KIT
- Flashlights
- Batteries
- Cell Phone Charger and Battery Banks
- Waterproof Matches
- Duct Tape
- Fire Extinguisher
- First Aid Supplies
- Gloves
- Gas Cans
- Chain Saw
HOUSE PREPARATIONS
- Place outdoor furniture in your garage.
- Trim branches overhanging roof.
- Board (don’t tape) exterior windows.
- Store important papers and documents in a waterproof container.
- Secure all windows and deadbolt exterior doors.
- Move computers and electronics off of the floor to prevent flood damage.
PERSONAL NEEDS
- 1 gallon of bottled water per person per day.
- Coolers for food and drink.
- Canned foods and manual can opener.
- Non-perishable protein snacks.
- Daily and Prescription medications with extra refill.
- Baby diapers and wipes.
