On September 9th, 2016, Mazda recalled 2.2 million cars and SUVs worldwide due to rear hatch failures which would cause the vehicle’s deck lid or trunk to unexpectedly slam closed.

In a statement released by Mazda, a representative indicated that the corrosion protection applied to the hatch lift supports at the factory did not provide adequate weather protection. Over time, water containing road salt or debris could infiltrate the support mechanism, causing them to corrode and break. At present, Mazda claims there have been no reports of injuries caused by the problem.

This recall covers certain 2010 through 2013 Mazda 3 compact cars, as well as 2012 through 2015 Mazda 5 vans. Also included are certain 2013 to 2016 CX-5 and 2016 CX-3 SUVs. More than 759,000 vehicles in the United States and Canada are affected.  Owners should contact their local Mazda dealer to determine if their vehicle is covered under the recall.
