How do I qualify for SSD benefits?: In order to determine whether or not you or a loved one qualifies for Social Security Disability benefits, we must first look at the jobs you have held over the years, how many hours you worked in these jobs, and whether these jobs are covered by Social Security. From there, it’s important to assess whether or not your medical condition causing your disability is one that meets the Social Security’s definition of a disability. We can work with you to determine which jobs are covered, and whether your medical condition meets the SSA standards for creating a disability.
What are Social Security work credits, and how are they important?: Social Security work credits is the term used by the SSA to determine if you have worked enough hours in a covered job in order to qualify for SSD benefits. These work credits are based on your total yearly wages, or self-employment, income. In order to qualify for SSD, you will need to have earned four (4) work credits each year.
The number of work credits you need to qualify for SSD benefits depends on your age at the time of your disability. According to the SSA website, generally an applicant needs 40 work credits to qualify for benefits, 20 of which have been earned in the last 10 years you worked before your disability. The SSA does allow fewer work credit for younger applicants.
What the disability application process look is like?: First, you will need to gather all relevant documentation and information that will be needed to prove your disabled. With the Firm’s Disability Checklist, you will know what information is needed and required prior to moving on to the next step.
Once all necessary documents and information are collected, you will be in a position to complete the government’s online Social Security Disability application. After the application has been submitted, the Social Security Administration will review your application to ensure the basic requirements have been met with regard to eligibility. This means checking to make sure you have worked enough years to qualify for disability benefits, as well as evaluating any current work activities you outlined. Once your application has been processed with the SSA, it will be forwarded to the Disability Determination Services’ office here in Florida. From there, the State Agency will complete the disability determination on behalf of the SSA.
