You have just been in a car accident. What do you do next? Do you call the police? What if the other driver does not have insurance? Do you take pictures? Keep calm and follow these few simple steps:
Address Passengers and Assess Damage
Severe injuries can happen from the result of a car crash. If someone is seriously injured, call 911 to get them medical help and do not attempt to move them unless absolutely necessary. After addressing any medical needs for yourself and for any passengers, move your vehicle safely out of the way of traffic and turn on your hazard lights, if possible.
Call the Police
You should call the police because in most cases, they need to be involved, especially if there are injuries or extensive property damage. You should also ask for a copy of the police report.
Document the Scene and Take Photos
Take note of the time of day and write down the street names and location of the accident. Use your phone and take photos of the damage to both vehicles at different angles. Take photos of the street in both directions and take photos of any skid marks or debris created by the accident. Remember, the more photos the better. Photos can be extremely helpful for your insurance company to determine the amount of damage that was done to your vehicle and the amount you should be compensated to have your vehicle repaired. They can also be used as evidence if your case ends up going to court.
Exchange Information
While waiting for the police to arrive, collect as much information as possible from the other driver and people who witnessed the accident. Ask for their names, addresses, telephone numbers, the other driver’s insurance company and policy number, license plate numbers and vehicle identification number. Write down the make and model of the other vehicle and if it is a commercial or work vehicle, be sure to write down their company contact information as well.
Seek Medical Treatment
Seek medical treatment for any and all injuries. Do not assume that you are okay. Neck and spine injuries often show up days or even weeks after an accident. It is best to see a doctor so that your injuries can be documented in case symptoms develop days after your accident- that way there is no question that the injuries were a result from the accident. Most states require that accident victims be seen by a doctor within a certain period of time in order for the injuries to be covered by the other driver’s auto insurance. In Florida, accident victims must seek medical treatment within 14 days of the accident.
