PROTECT YOUR SKIN THIS SUMMER

Don’t forget to use sunscreen when you head outside this summer! It’s important to protect your skin from the sun’s harmful ultraviolet rays. Using sunscreen helps prevent the sun’s radiation from reaching the skin.

According to the American Academy of Dermatology, the most effective sunscreens are ones that have broad spectrum protection, are water resistant, and have at least an SPF 30. Using sunscreen that has an SPF of 30 will block about 97 percent of the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays. Exposure to the sun can damage the skin and increase the risk of skin cancer, the most common of all cancers.

The sun’s rays are most intense between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. On cloudy days, up to 80 percent of the sun’s harmful can penetrate your skin. The best way to protect your skin is to use sunscreen or wear protective clothing when you’re outside—even when you’re in the shade. Be sure to reapply your sunscreen every two hours.

Remember to read the label on your sunscreen. Using expired sunscreen can decrease its effectiveness. It’s important to note that no sunscreen completely blocks UV radiation, so other precautions should be taken as well when spending time in the sun. Wearing hats and clothing to cover skin exposed to the sun are great ways to add extra protection from the sun.
